Protective ring of 12 large forts formed around Koenigsberg in the XIX century. In 1979, Fort No. 5 was turned into a museum of fortification and military equipment, but it was opened for visiting only after restoration in 2010. Fort No. 5 was built in 1878 and named in honor of the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm III who fought against Napoleon. In the hexagonal brick fort there were barracks, infirmary, kitchen, warehouses. Additional protection was provided by a ditch 25 meters wide.
The photo exhibition inside Fort No.5 is dedicated to the assassination of Koenigsberg in 1945. It was at Fort No. 5 that closed the road to Rauschen (now Svetlogorsk), the fiercest fighting was going on. Here is a collection of military equipment of those times, periodically undergoing historical reconstruction. Nearby is the largest fort No. 3 "King Friedrich-Wilhelm I". It was well preserved thanks to the fact that after the war it was turned into the army warehouse. The fort is open for visiting.
