Uspenskaya Square – the Heart of Uglich

Uspenskaya Square is the central in Uglich. There were shopping arcades here in the Middle Ages and the square was called Torgovaya (trading square). It was named Uspenskaya in the 20th century, in honor of the homonymous church that was destroyed during a fire in 1921. Several ancient buildings have been preserved in the square after all the changes. There are two buildings left from the shopping arcade. A two-story building, erected in the XVIII century in the style of provincial classicism, belonged to a merchant who traded in flour. The neighboring building, built later, had furnished rooms and small shops. Today this building performs the same functions: it houses shops and a hotel.
Another merchant’s house on Uspenskaya Square is the former property of merchants Evreinovs. Built in the late 19th century, the light green building served as a theater hall for some time: it hosted performances of the company directed by Mikhail Chekhov, the brother of the famous Russian writer Anton Chekhov. Today the building houses the municipal administration.Until the twentieth century, the square was adorned with four churches, but only the Church of Our Lady of Kazan has survived to this day. This is a white and pink temple of the XVIII century in baroque style with a three-tier bell tower. A wooden building with a carved decoration is a former library and the nowaday Museum of Urban Life of the XIX century. More than three thousand of its exhibits (furniture, dishes, paintings, costumes) recall of what Uglich looked like in the late XIX century. On display are the interiors of a merchant’s shop, a prosperous citizen’s house and a tea-house. By the way, the tea-house is functional: here you can taste tea from a real samovar, with homemade pies.
