Pokrovskiy Cathedral tops the mountain near the Voronezh River. The white-stone church in the classical style was erected on this place in the middle of the 18th century instead of a wooden church built in the early XVII century. The bell tower was built in the late 18th century, and in the mid-19th century the church was enlarged due to a new chapel. The iconostases were renewed as well.
In 1932 the Pokrovskiy Cathedral was turned into a house of defense, and later the building was given to an anti-religious museum. At that time, the Foucault's pendulum hung under the dome of the church. The building suffered during the war, especially the domes and roofs. However, this did not hinder the local residents from spending a night in the church. In October 1948, the building was returned to the church. In the late 1980s, the church was given the opportunity to build a baptismal church, a Sunday school and a sacristy. The temple keeps the relics of saints; many come here to worship the Iberian icon of the Mother of God, which is considered miracle-working. After visiting the cathedral you can go down to the nearby river.
