Chkalov Staircase leads from the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin to the embankment of the Volga. Its name was given in honor of a test pilot Valery Chkalov, whose monument is installed on the upper level of the stairs. From the top tier one can see a magnificent view of the Volga. From different levels of this ladder cascade one can make spectacular photos of the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin and the Volga.
The construction of the Chkalov Staircase was timed to coincide with the victory of the Soviet troops in the Battle of Stalingrad in 1943. 560 steps connect the upper and lower embankments. German war prisoners were engaged in the construction work. After the completion of the construction of the staircase in 1949 the construction project manager was accused of embezzling allotted funds, arrested and sentenced. He was rehabilitated after Stalin's death in 1953.
