The Ulm Municipal Museum was foundedin 1925 in Kiechelhaus. In the XVI century the house belonged to a family ofwealthy merchants. The banquet hall on the second floor with a stucco ceilingis interesting in the building. The main treasure of the Ulm Municipal Museum isthe 39-centimeter figure of a man with a lion's head carved from mammoth ivory.The Lion Man (Löwenmenschen) is about 40,000 years old, making it the world’s oldestsculptured Homo sapiens.
In thearchaeological section of the museum you can also see other artifacts of theStone Age, including the graves found under the Munster Square (Münsterplatz)close to the Ulm Cathedral. The museum collection includes sculptures by Jörg Syrlinthe Elder and Hans Multscher, who worked on the creation of the cathedral, aswell as late Gothic paintings by Zeitblom and Schaffner. The museum boasts anextensive collection of contemporary graphic art and a collection of paintingsand sculptures of the best artists of the 1950-1970s.
