The Sviyazhsk island-town is surrounded by the waters of the rivers Sviyaga and Volga. The town, located 30 kilometers far from Kazan, was built in 1551 on the orders of Ivan the Terrible in the record period of time - in just four weeks! The walls and towers, cut down in Uglich, were rafted along the Volga, then collected on the island. In 1918 Sviyazhsk became the place where repressed people were sent. There is a legend according to which exactly in the period of political repression a monument to Judah appeared on the island. But historians have not found reliable information about this fact.
Today people go to Sviyazhsk to see the numerous monastery ensembles. On the main square of the island-town, to where a narrow street from the Christmas (Rozhdestvenkie) gate lead, one can see the towering churches and bell towers of the two monasteries: St.John the Precursor Monastery of Sviyazhsk and the Holy Dormition Monastery. The oldest stone building of Sviyazhsk is the Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker of the middle of the 16th century with a bell tower 43 meters high. And the greatest value of the island are the rare frescoes of the Cathedral in Honor of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. They occupy an area of more than one thousand square meters and are recognized as a masterpiece of wall paintings of the era of Ivan the Terrible. Currently Sviyazhsk is waiting for a response from UNESCO, where an application was submitted to include the Cathedral in Honor of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Holy Trinity Church on the World Heritage List.
