Sevastyanov’s House in Yekaterinburg was known in Soviet times as the House of Labor Unions. This is one of the most elegant buildings in the city. It was presumably built in 1866, although the house with a rotunda existed there in the second decade of the XIX century. Having changed several owners, it eventually was owned by a mining engineer Nikolay Sevastyanov, who engaged an architect Alexander Paduchev to rebuild the house. This resulted in a classicism-style mansion, combining the features of Neo-Gothic, Baroque and Moorish styles.
As legend has it, Sevastyanov was utterly ruined when rebuilding the house, and he could not afford to live in it. He lived in a small house over the way, admiring his personal property through the window. It is believed that he was forced to sell the house to the Ministry of Justice, but this is unlikely to be the case. According to official data, Sevastyanov was sent to St. Petersburg for promotion, and this is the real reason for his house sale. The building was reconstructed prior to the two global summits - the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit (SCO) and the BRIC Summit – which took place in Yekaterinburg in 2009. The House was the residence of the President of Russia during the summit.
