Initially, the Krasny Prospekt in Novosibirsk was called Novonikolayevsky. It was designed as the main street. In 1896, a clearance was trenched among the pine trees. It became the basis for the future traffic artery of the city. Subsequently, its length made up 6.5 kilometers. Now the prospect gives place only to a 7-kilometer Pervomayskaya street.
In 1910, the Krasny Prospekt was paved thanks to the cargo tax imposed on the freights passing through Novosibirsk. At the same time the owners of the houses on the avenue were obliged to plant deciduous trees along the roadway. The Opera and Ballet Theatre, the 100-Flat Building, the Chapel of St. Nicholas, Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and Novosibirsk Museum of Local Lore are located along this main city highway.
