A solitary Intercession Khotkovo Monastery on the shore of a small Pazha River was founded in the XIV century. It is located just 20 minutes drive from Sergiyev Posad. The monastery, which was originally considered both women’s and men’s, gained distinction after the parents of St. Sergius of Radonezh, Cyril and Mary, took the monastic vows.
The parents of St. Sergius of Radonezh lived a consecrated life a short while. They were buried at the monastery and later canonized. Believers have a good tradition to this day to visit the Intercession Khotkovo Monastery when being on pilgrimage to the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius. The relics of Cyril and Mary, transferred to the Pokrovsky Cathedral of the XIX century, are still considered here the main shrine. The monastery was closed in Soviet times, and nuns reappeared here in 1989. Now the monastery has a Sunday school and a shelter-board for girls.
