Toy Museum: One of the Oldest Museums in Europe

The Toy Museum was created in 1918 by the painter and collector Nikolai Bartram. It was initially located in Moscow, but in the 30s of the XX century the collection was moved to Sergiyev Posad and placed in the old building of the former commercial school over the Kelarsky Pond. This red-brick mansion, located opposite the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, still houses the Toy Museum which is recognized one of the oldest in Europe!
The Toy Museum occupies four halls where there are over 150 thousand exhibits. Here you can find toys from all over the world: from China, Japan, Germany, France and Switzerland. Of particular interest are the first Russian nesting dolls. There is also a showcase with toys that belonged to the children of the last Russian Emperor Nicholas II. Among the most ancient exhibits is a wooden statuette of the mother goddess of the XI century brought from the Russian North. In addition, the collection contains the famous Bogorodskoye toys on hinge joints, as well as a variety of pre-revolutionary Christmas toys and New Year toys of the Soviet period. There are also children's corners with toys in the museum, where kids can just play.
