The cross-domed cathedral was built on the island of Lomza in 1933 and until 1945 it was called Kreuzkirche. During its construction the modernist style was chosen, and it became one of the last German churches in Koenigsberg. Its grand western facade with two connected towers is decorated with a huge panel of majolica with a cross.
The building of Kreuzkirche was damaged during the Second World War and during Soviet times it housed a factory for the production of fishing tools. Butcracks appeared because of the installation of heavy factory equipment on the walls of the cathedral. In the 1950s another floor was built over the building, which aggravated the situation even more. In the 1980s the cathedral in the critical condition was abandoned until 1989 when it was transferred to the Russian Orthodox Church. In 1994 the Holy Cross Cathedral was reconstructed, giving it an original appearance, and the interior now fully corresponds to the Orthodox canon. The iconostasis for the cathedral was made of amber.
