"Europe-Asia" Obelisk – a Granite Pillar on the Mountain Berezovaya (Birch Mountain)

The "Europe-Asia" obelisk is located not far from Yekaterinburg, on the Mountain Berezovaya (birch Mountain). The first memorial pillar, symbolizing the border of Asia and Europe, was established here in spring of 1837. It was timed to the visit of the future Emperor Alexander II of Russia to these places, who traveled around the country accompanied by his mentor, the famous poet Alexander Zhukovsky. This trip, which aimed to show the future tsar the immensity of his acres, was called by Zhukovsky an "Engagement with Russia." However, the wooden pillar, viewed by the future emperor, has not been preserved.

In 1873 the "Europe-Asia" wooden obelisk was replaced by a marble one with a gilded eagle on the steeple, but it was destroyed after the revolution. Therefore, a new granite-faced monument was established here in 1926. The current memorial sign on the border of Europe and Asia is the fourth in order! The pompous granite pillar with a double-headed eagle was erected on entering Pervouralsk on the Mountain Berezovaya in 2008.
