Alekseevsky Monastery was founded in 1371. Enclosed with wooden walls, it had to defend the approaches to Uglich from the direction of Yaroslavl. Alekseevskaya Church was built here in the early 16th century. It was rebuilt more than once, and in the 1930s it was turned into an art gallery. This building with columns stands in the territory of the monastery, still waiting for restoration. Today, the territory of this functional convent contains several monuments of Old Russian architecture.
Among the curious buildings in the territory of the Alekseevsky Monastery is a three-tent Church of the Assumption, one of the two preserved in Russia. The church was called wondrous for its graceful proportions and three domes resembling the battlements of a crown. It keeps the most revered icon of Uglich — the image of Our Lady «Candle Unquenchable», also known as «Vratarnitsa of Uglich». The image is considered miraculous, and you can see dozens of rings and other ornaments behind its glass. They are given as a token of gratitude from those who were healed after praying to the icon. The Church of St. John the Baptist, built in 1681, is famous for its tiles with images of birds and flowers. They are believed to be nearly the most beautiful in Uglich. The decoration of the church combines two epochs: an original painting has been preserved on the western side of the porch, and the rest of the decoration belongs to the XIX century. Many cats live in the territory of the monastery, for which tourists compare it with the Buddhist monasteries of Thailand. Another «landmark» of the monastery is the rose garden planted on the site of the cemetery.
