The square of 1905 is the central square in Yekaterinburg, where the main administrative buildings of the city are located. Before the Soviet era it was called a Marketplace, where there were retail shops, stores, banks and an Epiphany Cathedral. During the events of 1905 revolution, clashes took place here, which led to human losses. The square was given the name of "1905" in memory of those events. Several administrative buildings in the socialist realism style were built here after the demolition of the Epiphany Cathedral in 1930. One of these buildings was the workplace of Boris Yeltsin, the future president of Russia and the First Secretary of CPSU Committee of Sverdlovsk Oblast of those times.
The Square of 1905 was partly reconstructed in the post-Soviet period. There was even talk of recreating the destroyed cathedral, however, the current appearance of the square is still typical for the USSR era. The Square of 1905 also serves as the venue for official holidays and military parades. Interestingly, during one of the parades, in 1951, the horse threw off Marshal Georgy Zhukov, who was in command of the parade. The war hero, who was in disgrace in those years, commanded the Urals Military District.
