The main shopping street of the city is laid on the site of an ancient trade route, which was founded by Charlemagne in the VIII century.
Westenhellweg is the main shopping street in Dortmund. As in most other German cities, it is located near the main train station. Visitors of Dortmund should only walk a few hundred meters from the main station to get to it. On the street there are shops of major trading houses of Germany, cafes, restaurants, souvenir shops and travel agencies.
Historians claim that once an ancient trade route, which was founded by Charlemagne in the VIII century, was in place of the main street of Dortmund.
In 2013 Westenhellweg was recognized as Germany's most visited street: per hour about 13 thousand people have visited the street!
