Nürburgringaround the ruins of the medieval Nürburg Castle was built in 1927. The GeneralGerman Automobile Club held the first competition in the same year and furtherthe circuit was used for the famous Formula One race. Initially, the track witha total length of 28.265km consisted of four configurations.
The Northern Loop (Nordschleife), which pilot JackieStewart nicknamed "The Green Hell", has been considered the mostdangerous section of Nürburgring since its opening. It is named the most difficult loop around theworld. A huge number of world-class competitions (DTM, GP2 and other series ofmotor racing) are held and new cars are tested on the racetrack, which is alsopopular among amateur pilots. In the so-called tourist days the track is openfor anyone wishing to drive his/her own or a rented car on it.
