The tiny Altomünster is only 23 kilometers and 25 minutes by car from Dachau. The monastery named after Saint Alto was preserved in the quiet town. Saint Alto was an itinerant monk-hermit. He founded the monastery in around 750. Towards 1000 it became a Benedictine abbey. And in 1496 nuns of the Bridgettine Order appeared there. This Catholic religious order was founded in the XIV century by Saint Bridget of Sweden and practically lived under the Benedictine rule of life. In 1803, the monastery was dissolved, but in 1842 again became the home for nuns. Today, the monastery and abbey in Bremen are the last Bridgettine monasteries (Birgittenkloster) in Germany. It is very pleasant to walk through the territory of the monastery especially in the warmer months. Here, everything is smothered in flowers. The monastery runs a brewery where "Altomünster beer" is brewed. You can taste in both on tap and in original bottles with porcelain stoppers.
