Yew and box-tree grove – thousand-year-old forest
Yew and box-tree grove with the flora of the pre-glacial period on the south-eastern slope of the Big Akhun Mountain in Sochi is a subject of UNESCO World Heritage. There are unique berry yews in the grove, the age of which is about two thousand years. An evergreen box-tree, known as an iron tree, reaches its maximum size at the age of 500. Grow beech, oak, linden, hornbeam, maple and rhododendron also grow here.
A large five-kilometer long Big Circle and a two-kilometer long Small Circle are laid along the protected yew and box-tree grove. The Great Circle trail runs along the break of the Khosta Gorge, falls down a wood of beech-trees and passes by the ruins of the Byzantine fortress of the 12th century. At the bottom tourists can enjoy a breathtaking view of the valley of the Khosta River. On the Small Ring one can walk along two small flat-bottom valleys - ancient crust factures, see a fig tree, Colchian ivy, an ancient lime tree with two trunks and a huge one thousand year old yew. A museum of flora and fauna of the Caucasian Reserve was opened at the entrance to the yew and box-tree grove. Along the trails there are tablets with information about plants.
