Church of St. John the Baptist (Shirkovo): a wooden temple of the XVII century.

The wooden church of St. John the Baptist raises on the bank of the Verkhnevolzhsky Reservoir, in the village of Shirkovo, 200 km far from Tver. The time of its construction is 1694-97. A legend is associated with its appearance, according to which merchants were carrying two icons of John the Baptist on the trade route passing here. They stopped for the night on the bank of Lake Vselug, and the next morning they could not move the icons from their place, therefore left them. And a few years later an unusually beautiful temple with a height of 45 meters was built on this place. It was put on the base of huge boulders, as the soil is marshy here.
The Church of St. John the Baptist is completely wooden. By the middle of the twentieth century, the temple suffered greatly, both from time and from people. Only by the heroic efforts of the restorers it was saved, every log was re-sorted. Now the temple is considered to be active, but it is opened once a year, on July 7, the day of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, for the procession and a festive prayer service.
