St. John the Baptist Church in the Tolchkovo sloboda is unique in all the ancient Russian architecture: it has 15 domes! Another peculiarity of the church is that its entire interior is covered with frescoes depicting more than 500 topics. And all this magnificence was created by Yaroslavl craftsmen.
St. John the Baptist Church was built in 1687. The domes of the church form a pyramidal composition, which looks impressive and solemn. There is a 45-meter high bell tower in the Moscow Baroque style at the south-west corner of the church. Much attention was paid to the exterior finish: the facade of the temple is decorated with tiles, paintings with plant motifs and an ornament from a figured brick. The interior decoration is more than rich: almost all the space is covered with paintings, including doors, benches and stairs, except perhaps the floor. The paintings cover hundreds of biblical topics, from the creation of the world to the Last Judgment, as well as motifs from spiritual literature and hagiology. The interior decoration of the temple can be called a kind of Orthodox encyclopedia, where you can find images of all the Orthodox saints. Today the church has lost its religious function and is a part of the Yaroslavl Museum-Reserve. The temple, which is called a "flower in stone," can be viewed from the inside from Wednesday to Sunday. This temple, like the monument to Yaroslav the Wise, is depicted on a 1000-ruble note.
