St. George's (Yuriev) Monastery is one of the oldest monastic complexes in Russia. It was built in Veliky Novgorod in the 12th century and is currently inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The incredibly beautiful and imposing monastery, which was considered the richest spiritual center of the 14th-15th centuries, was founded by Prince Yaroslav the Wise at the head of the Volkhov River.
St. George's (Yuriev) Monastery has an ancient Church of St. George the Victorious, built by the architect Peter, the first master who is mentioned in the Old Russian annals. Unique frescoes have been preserved inside the cathedral. Worth a look is the Church of the Exaltation of the Cross, the 52-meter bell tower of the 19th century and a shelter-chapel over the holy spring. At the close of the tour you better walk to the Volkhov River bank, on the opposite side of which you can see the ruins of the Cathedral of the Annunciation of the XIX century on the Rurikovo Gorodische. It’s worth remarking that delicious fresh bread is sold in the monastery shop.
