The Square of Glory (Ploshchad Slavy), Victory Square and Samara Square (Samarskaya Ploshchad) together create a single architectural ensemble, a monument of the military glory. The square is decorated with a bas-relief of the Motherland and the Eternal Flame, at which wreaths are laid on February 23 and May 9. The square also serves as an observation deck, offering a panoramic view of the Volga.
In 1971, it was decided to erect a Monument of Glory in the Ploshchad Slavy. It is dedicated to the workers of Samara’s aviation industry. These people performed a labor feat during the Great Patriotic War. It was in Samara where IL-2 Sturmovik (ground-attack aircraft) was produced in that difficult period of history. The monument depicts a 13-meter figure of a worker. He looks at the Volga from a 40-meter pedestal, holding tilted planes in his hands, which symbolize the aircraft wings.
