The first passenger train arrived at the railway station of Simferopol on October 14, 1874. Simferopol is the gateway of Crimea, but the construction of the railway started here only in 1871. Originally it was planned to lay it 20 km from the city. But local entrepreneurs insisted for the railway to necessarily pass through the city.
The first building of Simferopol railway station was completely destroyed during the retreat of the fascist units in 1944, but the communication with the "big land" was restored as early as in 10 days. In 1951, the city residents saw a new station building. It is built in Italian style: strict symmetry, galleries on the sides and an inner yard with a fountain. On the roof of the building you can see (only if you climb the clock tower) a "real" antique temple - a technical building that is visible from no other point of the city. The 42 meters high station clock tower is actually a water tower. The artesian well, from which water is pumped, is located at the base of the tower. The clock on the tower causes a lot of questions among tourists. First, the signs of the zodiac on it are in a wrong sequence. Secondly, there suddenly appeared the constellations of Canes Venatici, Cygnus and Serpentarius instead of Taurus, Virgo and Libra. The clock is wound up every nine days. The railway station building has regularly been hosting symphony concerts for several years now.
