The Saviour Cathedral was built by the order of Emperor Nicholas I after his visit to Pyatigorsk. It is not accidental that the temple resembles the Christ the Savior Cathedral in Moscow. After all, both cathedrals were designed by one and the same architect — Konstantin Thon. Funds for the construction of the cathedral in Pyatigorsk were collected throughout the country.
The five-domed stone Saviour Cathedral with golden domes opened in Pyatigorsk in 1867. And in 1936 the cathedral was demolished. In 1991 the restoration of the temple began according to the drawings and photographs. And now tourists see a copy of the cathedral which was consecrated in 2013. The main relic of the temple is the Iberian Icon of the Mother of God saved from the old cathedral.
A park with the bust of the writer Leo Tolstoy and the monument to Mikhail Lermontov erected in 1889 adjoins the Saviour Cathedral from the west. This is the first monument to the poet established in Russia. The monument to Lermontov was created based on his self-portrait of 1837: the poet sits on a rock in an officer’s coat. The height of the monument together with the white granite pedestal is more than five meters. The base of the monument is decorated with a bronze lyre with a wreath.
