Rizopolozhenskiy Monastery was founded in Suzdal in 1207. Its most ancient preserved structure is the white-stone three-domed Rizopolozhenskiy Cathedral of the early 16th century. The monastery is also famous for its 72-meter Venerable Bell Tower of the 19th century. It is the highest in Suzdal. It was built in honor of the victory over Napoleon. The monastery stands on a hill and the bell tower is visible from anywhere in the town. A remarkable element of the complex is the white Holy Gates of the 17th century with two white and red turrets.
The glory of the Rizopolozhenskiy Monastery is connected with Feodulia, the daughter of Prince Mikhail of Chernigov. Having heard of her groom’s death, she took the veil and became a nun Euphrosyne. Legend credits her with the salvation of the monastery from devastation by the Tatar-Mongols. In the XVI century, she was recognized as a saint. The miraculous relics of St. Euphrosyne of Suzdal are kept in the cathedral. After 1923 the monastery was closed. The nuns began to revive life in the monastery in 1999. It is worth to climb the bell tower of the monastery which offers a perfect view of the surrounding area. Walking up the stairs, you can get acquainted with the history and technology of bell founding.
