The Ring Mountain is a picturesque rock formation in the vicinity of Kislovodsk, near the village of Mirny. An amazing arch of 8 meters in diameter was formed on a hill as a result of weathering of sandy rocks. It offers a wonderful view, but you need to be careful when going to the arch: the ascent is very steep, and the stones are slippery.
The Ring Mountain was famous in many local legends. It was also mentioned by the Russian poet Mikhail Lermontov in his famous novel «A Hero of Our Time». Legend has it that once there lived a brave Araf, who decided to protect his people against evil genies. They predicted his victory only if he slips through the stone ring without touching on it. Araf was able to do this only on the third try and defeated the enemies. And since then, if a warrior passed through this stone circle on horseback, he was always a winner in the following battles.
There are still other legends in Kislovodsk associated with this mountain. For example, there is a story about a rich heiress who fell in love with a simple shepherd and he gave her this stone «ring» as a token of love. Another legend mentions travelers who, standing in this natural arch, later became lucky and successful in business. The stone arch is surrounded by beautiful grottoes, and the mountain itself offers splendid views of Kislovodsk and Elbrus.
