Mount Beshtau with a height of 1,400 meters is the highest in the region of the Caucasian Mineral Waters. Its name is translated as «five mountains». And Pyatigorsk is named just by the meaning of the mountain. Mount Beshtau can be seen from anywhere in the city. One can climb on the mountain only on foot. The climbing to the height of 760 meters will take several hours. But the efforts will pay off a wonderful view of the tops of Elbrus and the city below.
The Holy Dormition Second-Athos Monastery was founded in 1904 at the foot of Beshtau. And according to a legend, the first church originated here in the Byzantine period. In 1927 the monastery was closed. The restoration of the monastery began in the late 1990s, and it was opened in 2001. The Church of St. George and the Church of the Assumption of the Mother of God are at the territory of the monastery. In the monastery one can buy freshly baked bread and honey from the monastic apiary.
