Afanasy Nikitin Embankment, located between the Starovolzhsky and Novovolzhsky bridges, is one of the most beautiful places in Tver. Its main attraction is a monument to merchant Afanasy Nikitin, installed in 1955 on the embankment of the Volga. The merchant is as if standing on the nose of his ship, decorated with a carved figure - the head of a horse.
It was from Tver that in 1468 the great journey of the Tver merchant Nikitin began, which became the first European that reached India. This happened 25 years earlier than the trip of the Portuguese Vasco da Gama! The Church of the Resurrection with a bell tower, built in 1731, is behind the monument to Afanasy Nikitin, as well as a park with a fountain. Under the Starovolzhsky bridge on the embankment there is another park of submariners, where a bronze Monument to Submariners stands in memory of all the inhabitants of Tver, who served in the submarine fleet and did not come back home.
