In 1984 a monument was erected in honor of the 150th anniversary of the birth of Mendeleev in front of the Tobolsk Pedagogical Institute bearing the name of the scientist. Тhe city decided to memorialize its famous compatriot — the author of the Mendeleev’s table and the founder of modern chemistry, in such a way.
The great Russian scientist Dmitri Mendeleev was born in Tobolsk in 1834. Here he spent his childhood and here he graduated from the Tobolsk male gymnasium, after which the family moved to St. Petersburg where Mendeleev entered the University. The monument to the scientist in Tobolsk is not the only one. In 2012 a ten-story house No. 36 was built on Mendeleyev Avenue. A colored image of Mendeleyev’s periodic table was painted on its facade.
