The pebbled Krasnogorskaya Square is the historic center of Sergiyev Posad. This place is known since the 16th century when the construction of the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius was completed and a wide square area was marked out on the southern slope of the fortress hill.
In the XIX century the square was given a new look: it was paved and there was built an impressive red-brick building of the town shopping arcade. Fairs and bazaars started to be held here at this time, and the best taverns in Sergiyev Posad were located along the entire perimeter of the square. Today there are always a lot of pilgrims and tourists in the square who admire the Christmas Church, the Holy Gates, the Drying Baths, the new shopping arcade and Monuments to Sergius of Radonezh and Saint Cyril and Anna. It is customary to enter the shopping arcade to buy souvenirs. There are always a lot of pigeons here, as in the famous square in Venice.
