The Krasnodar State History and Archeology Culture Preserve named after E.D. Felitsyn is one of the first museums in the Caucasus. Such museums appear thanks to exclusively enthusiastic people who know and love their land. One of such persons in Krasnodar in the last third of the XIX century was a Cossack and an outstanding scholar Eugene Dmitrievich Felitsyn, who was called the "Encyclopedia of the Caucasus." He studied the history and life of the peoples living in this region. Felitsyn’s own archaeological finds, as well as everyday items, donated by the residents of the city, served a basis for the future museum funds. In 1879 he managed to organize a small museum.
The Krasnodar State History and Archeology Culture Preserve named after E.D. Felitsyn had a fortunate destiny after the death of its founder. The exhibits were hindered from falling into private hands. In 1960 the whole collection, built by E. Felitsyn, was transferred to the merchants Bogarsukovs’ house, one of the most beautiful palaces in the city center. And only in 1991 the museum was given the name of its founder. The History and Archeology Culture Preserve acquaints visitors with the nature and fauna of the Caucasus, with the history of the Cossacks and other nationalities living in the Kuban. Here you will find the richest collection of archaeological and ethnographic values: amphorae, dishes and ornamentals of antiquity and later periods.
