Korsunskaya Church and Patterns of Red Brick

The red-and-white Korsunskaya Church is visible at the approaches to Uglich from the direction of Yaroslavl. The elements of decoration of this temple seem oversize at close range, and there is something behind that: during the construction they were planned to be noticeable and attractive from afar. The church was built in 1730 on the site of a wooden Church of the Intercession (Pokrovskaya Church). In XIII-XVII centuries there stood the Monastery of St. Macarius of Egypt on this place, on the ruins of which the Korsunskaya Icon of the Mother of God was found, and the new temple was consecrated in honor of this icon.
The five-domed Korsunskaya Church combines features of the Naryshkin Baroque and Old Russian architecture. The most impressive part of it is an octagonal bell tower begirt with patterns of red brick. There are arches under the roof of the temple, its windows are decorated with surrounds, and the facades — with patterned tiles. The interior is mostly new: it appeared after the restoration in the 1970s. Today the church keeps the very same Korsunskaya icon and the relics of some saints.
