The Museum Complex "Konny Dvor" is an imposing ancient building on the bank of the White Pond right in front of the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius. It was built at the end of the 18th century especially for monastic stables. Today, the "Konny Dvor" houses a Museum Complex which presents a rich collection of archaeological finds of the Stone Age, including dishes, bone figurines and ancient pagan amulets.
One of the most popular expositions of the Museum Complex "Konny Dvor" is devoted to the Russian nesting doll (matryoshka). Here you can see a huge 45-seat matryoshka, a cosmonaut matryoshka, tumbler toys and even matryoshka dolls depicting Russian tsars. There is an exhibition hall here with a rich collection of Russian tiles for decoration of stoves and facades of houses. Worth a look is a collection of samples of Russian Applied and Decorative Arts, items of folk handicrafts: the famous Zhostovo trays, Bogorodskoye and Dymkovo toys, Gzhel ceramics and Khokhloma painting. The main wing of the "Konny Dvor" houses an exposition dedicated to the Russian village. There are over 700 exhibits here including old clothes and headdresses, a weaving machine, spinning wheels, genuine skates from village roofs, carved plat-bands and a carved facade of the whole house.
