The Holy Assumption (Knyaginin) Monastery is due to the wife of prince Vsevolod the Big Nest - Maria (she gave her husband 12 children). Maria insisted on building of the monastery in 1200. For centuries the Grand Duchesses and princely daughters were buried here. In the XV century the monastery was destroyed by the Mongol-Tatars, but in the 16th century it was rebuilt with the support of the Moscow tsars. In the XIX century a hospital and a school for girls from poor families were opened under the monastery. In 1923 the monastery was closed and opened only in 1992.
The central Assumption Cathedral of the the monastery of the 16th century is known for its preserved frescoes dating from 1648. This is the work of the Moscow artel of the craftsman Mark Matveev. Thanks to it, now one can see images of many Vladimir-Suzdal princes here. In 1789 the Kazan Church was built on the foundation of the ancient church of St. John Chrysostom.
