Kislovodsk Fortress dates back to 1809. Located in the historic center of the city, it gave rise to Kislovodsk. Gradually, the fortress turned into a small military town with massive walls, powder depots, protective moats, high earthen ramparts and barracks.
Kislovodsk Fortress served to repel the attacks of the Caucasian highlanders. Under a reliable cover of its walls, noblemen and military officials gladly stayed in Kislovodsk, took healing waters and struck up useful acquaintances. The fortress currently houses the Kislovodsk Museum of Local History. Its expositions tell about Kislovodsk, its history, culture and rich traditions.
