Kirova avenue, one of the central streets of Pyatigorsk, begins at the square opposite the railway station. Before the revolution of 1917 it was the Kashtanovy Boulevard. Now there are a lot of cafes and shops on the avenue. The famous Pyatigorsk narrow-gauge tram is running from the railway station to the Saviour Cathedral. Nearby there is another square with one of the most famous city fountains called Dedy-Gnomy-Skazka. The fountain stands on a stone mountain with grottoes from where water pours.
The Fountain Dedy-Gnomy-Skazka in Pyatigorsk has been operating since 1890, when a water pipe, giving 300 thousand buckets of fresh water a day, was built in the city. The stream of the fountain rose 10 meters and it was called «Velikan» («The Giant»). In 1910 the sculptor Karl Ludwig Shodkiy gave it a modern look. For the 230th anniversary of Pyatigorsk the fountain was decorated with illumination. A marble slab with «pyatachok» (circle) of brass with diameter of 65 cm has been embedded in the pavement near the Galereya Shopping Centre. The locals use the sign as a meeting place.
