The history of Derbent contains pages related to the name of Emperor Peter the Great. As a leader of the Persian campaign, he spent several weeks in the city in 1722. It is known that he lived in a dugout with soldiers, preferring security to comfort. In the early XIX century the inhabitants of Derbent decided to preserve and perpetuate the place where the emperor lived and placed a pavilion with columns above the dugout. However, the place where the dugout stood was not found that time.
The place of Peter the Great’s House was discovered as late as in 2015. The foundation of a small two-room dugout of the emperor was found as a result of digs carried out by experts. Artifacts of that era: bullets, coins and household items were also found. All of them and Peter the Great’s House can currently be seen in a restored pavilion under a glass showcase.
