The Friedland Gates are considered to be the youngest gate in Kaliningrad. They were built in the middle of the XIX century and named in honor of the town of the same name (today's Pravdinsk). The statue of the Great Master of the Teutonic Order Siegfried von Feuchtwangen was preserved on the facade. At the beginning of the 20th century the gates lost their defensive and transport functions. In 1920 they were made part of the «Yuzhny» (southern) park. And after the war they were used as a warehouse.
If you want to imagine the life of Koenigsberg before the beginning of the XX century, you cannot do that without visiting this gate. Indeed, since 2008 the municipal museum "Friedland Gate" is located inside. Here one can learn about the history of Koenigsberg from the time of the Teutonic Order to the Soviet settlers thanks to a unique holographic film. In another room one can take virtual walk through the streets of the old city, how it looked like in the XIX - XX centuries. The museum allows you to touch history: in the old post office you can send a postcard; you may be photographed in a photo studio; look into the typical house of a resident of Koenigsberg. In the Knight's Hall the armor of medieval knights and their weapons are displayed, and the reconstruction of the bomb shelter reminds of military deprivations. Everything in the museum is done generously so that to be interesting to a visitor. For this reason the museum won the All-Russian competition in the nomination "Technologies of the museum exposition"!
