Foros Church, built on the Red Cliff above Cape Foros, is one of the wonders of the Crimean peninsula. It causes sighs of admiration when a panorama of the mountains and this church hovering above the four-hundred-meter-high abyss opens from the Yalta highway. There is a legend that one day a passing by carriage with a daughter of a local entrepreneur engaged in tea business almost fell into the abyss. The horses stopped above the rock in the place where the Foros Church was later built in 1892. But in fact the church was built in honor of the rescue of Emperor Alexander III and his family in the train wreck and the rest of the stories are just nice legends.
A project in the Russian style was chosen for the construction of the Foros Church. The temple was decorated with nine domes of various sizes. Inkerman stone and Carrara marble were chosen for the decoration of the outer walls and columns. The interior decoration was no less impressive: a massive oak iconostasis with gilt royal gates contrasted with the walls decorated with Byzantine ornament. During the Soviet era the crosses and domes of the church were destroyed and the icons were plundered. There was a restaurant in the building for some time. During the war the walls of the Foros Church served as a defensive structure in battles for the Baydar Gate. And in 1969 the fire destroyed the last murals and there was practically nothing left from the church. Only in 1992, when the church turned exactly 100 years old, new domes were raised on its towers. Restoration work continued till 2004 and the church returned its original enchanting appearance.
