Dolmens are constructions from monolithic stone slabs weighing several tons usually with one hole. The age of such buildings is estimated at several thousand years. About 200 dolmens have survived in Sochi. Тhey are especially often found in the Lazarevsky district and in the vicinities of Krasnaya Polyana.
In order to see the dolmens one can, for example, go to the valley of the Ashe River, where there are three dolmens of Kapibge. In the Shkhafit aul a dolmen stands in the courtyard of a private house where tourists are always welcome. Not far from the village Volkonka one can see a unique monolithic dolmen with a height of one and a half meters, carved into a 17-meter boulder. It is known as the Volkonsky dolmen, since Princess Volkonskaya often visited this megalith. There is a Dolmen Valley with 12 dilapidated structures near the village Solokh-aul. One can see a dolmen in the center of the city too, in the courtyard of the Sochi Museum of History. Scientists still do not agree in opinion what the dolmens served for. The most common versions are burials or religious buildings. And according to the Adyghe legend, dwarfs once laid a spell on mighty giants to build stone houses for them.
