Derbent Lighthouse: a Pole Star

Derbent has been a port city since the dawn of time. It had been accepting ships on the Silk Road for 1,500 years. In the middle of the XVIII century Derbent became a Russian port on the Caspian Sea. With the development of maritime navigation, there emerged a need for a lighthouse. Therefore, the southernmost Russian lighthouse was built in the city in 1853. Originally it was an octagonal tower with an ordinary wooden lamp. The lighthouse was destroyed several times, and only in 1919 it acquired its modern appearance.

Derbent lighthouse stands on the remains of the northern wall of Derbent fortress, in the heart of the city. It is included in the register of protected monuments of architecture, but you can look at it only from the outside. The lighthouse is in working order. It is equipped with modern optics and a lamp, the signal from which is viewed at a distance of 18 nautical miles. At night, the light from the lighthouse is visible from anywhere in Derbent.
