The elegant building «Dacha Shalyapina» has never belonged to the famous Russian bass singer. He gave concerts in this mansion and even stayed here with his family and friends in summer 1917, but never owned the house. This mansion always belonged to the merchant Ushakov who built it in the early twentieth century and turned it into a boarding house, which was famous for its hospitality.
«Dacha Shalyapina» was designed by St. Petersburg architect E. Khodzhaev, who was on work experience in the Caucasus. He built the house in Art Nouveau style being fashionable that time: the building is decorated with turrets, stained-glass windows and other decorative elements. The mansion is a magnificent example of aristocratic country architecture of the early 20th century. The memory of the talent of the Russian singer, who repeatedly gave concerts here, helped the residents of Kislovodsk to preserve this unique building. Now it houses the State Historical and Cultural Museum «Dacha Shalyapina», the exposition of which tells about the life of Fyodor Ivanovich Shalyapin (or Feodor Chaliapin) and introduces the details of everyday life and traditions of the Russian nobility in emigration.
