The amazing Church of the Nativity of the Virgin stands in a small village of Gorodnia, 30 km far from Tver from the side of Moscow, not far from the Moscow-St.Petersburg highway. This is the oldest building in the Tver region. In the middle Ages, the village was called Vertyazin. A wooden fortress and a princely palace stood here, and they even minted their own money - "Pechat Gorodenska". The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin was built in the middle of the 14th century by the decree of Prince Mikhail Alexandrovich on the steep bank of the Volga River. The current structure is the second one, the church was rebuilt after a fire in 1412.
Frescoes have been preserved on the walls of the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin. One can see the image of the holy Prince Mikhail of Tver. The temple has never been closed and always received parishioners. Not far from the church, at Leningradskaya Street, 119A one can see one of the imperial road palaces that were built all along the road from Moscow to St. Petersburg. The «palace» of Gorodnia in the style of the late Baroque was built in 1788 by architect Nikitin. Later a zemsky hospital was set up in it, and now an outpatient clinic is located.
