The unique collection of the Central Museum of Tavrida has more than 100 thousand archeological, natural and historical exhibits! Here you can gain insight into the life on the Crimean peninsula after its annexion to Russia in 1783. It was then that this land was called Taurida. The museum exposition is dedicated to the nature, landscapes and history of the Taurida Governorate in the XIX-XX centuries.
The Central Museum of Tavrida was founded in 1887. It contained a huge number of items found in the XIX century during excavations, which have long remained unsystematized and undescribed. The heritage of the ancient German tribes, Goths, Tatars and Genoese - all this was stored in private collections and was not available to the general public. Since the opening of the museum, various gifts have been passed on here: coins of the states existing in the territory of the Crimea at different times, antique ceramics and ornaments, statues and household items, paintings and maps. The museum has often changed its address, and only in 1988 it got a permanent building on Gogol Street.
