The Cathedral of the Nativity of Christ has changed its appearance only once over 300 years of its existence. Its history began in the late Х century when the first church in Alexandrov, consecrated in honor of Nicholas the Wonderworker, appeared on this site. In the XI century, the Church of the Nativity of Christ arose next to it. At the end of the 17th century, a stone cathedral of the Nativity of Christ was built in place of two wooden churches with the help of Tsarevich Peter I, the future Russian Emperor. In 1829, local merchants funded the construction of a stone bell tower instead of the wooden one, which stood exactly 100 years. That was also when the cathedral was remodeled in the Empire style.
The Cathedral of the Nativity of Christ was both an opera house and a house of culture during the Soviet period. Its revival began in 1991, and new iconostases were installed in it already in the 21st century. There is a monument to the Russian Saint and Commander Alexander Nevsky in the church yard. According to legend, he used to hunt in these parts, hence the name of Alexandrovskaya Sloboda.
The cathedral is located on the Cathedral Square, where there is also a Monument to Alexandrov Republic of 1905. This is a bronze girl on a six-meter pedestal, holding the revolutionary banner in her arms. The sculpture was installed on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the October Revolution in memory of those who raised a revolt in 1905 and proclaimed the Alexandrov Republic which, however, lasted just a few hours.
