Bolgar Historical and Archeological Complex is an ancient settlement on the bank of the Volga, the historical homeland of the Tatars with one hundred of the most northern monuments of Islam of the XIII-XVIII centuries. This unique place has been recently included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
One needs to visit Bolgar complex to feel the connection of the times between the 21st century and the Cathedral Mosque of the 13th century, and also imagine what could happen in the White Chamber (the so-called public bathhouse here) and in the mysterious Black Chamber, about which many ancient legends were shaped. The Northern Mausoleum, where gravestones covered with Arabic script are collected, the Eastern Mausoleum, which for a time existed as an Orthodox church, are also interesting as well as the ruins of the Khan's palace, where archaeological excavations are still going on. There is another unique monument on the bank of the Volga – Captain’s well (Gabdrakhman’s Well) with its own legend and the purest water.
