The Amusement Park on the Damansky Island is the largest recreation area in Yaroslavl. A straw figure of Maslenitsa is burnt here in winter, while in summer people ride bikes, roller-skates and segways. You can see newlyweds here at any time of the year, when newly-made husbands carry their wives in arms across the bridge which connects the island with the city center - such is the ritual.
Before the Great Patriotic War there were garden-beds on the territory of the current Damansky island-park, and residents of Yaroslavl got to them by boat. However, this place was abandoned and considered dangerous in the post-war time. The city authorities had been improving the territory of the island for several years. At first, here there was just a green recreation area, in the 1990s - an amusement park. Today, the park features several types of slides and carousels for children and adults, bicycle rental centers, cafes, alleys with flower beds, benches and art objects like a three-meter-high chair. The park hosts musical evenings, dancing parties and city holidays, such as the City Day and the Ice-Cream Day. The Amusement Park on the Damansky Island is part of the compulsory program of a walk through the city for the newlyweds, and in late February people welcome spring here, burning a straw figure of Maslenitsa, the official Residence of which is in Yaroslavl.
