The Kaliningrad region is famous for storing 90% of the world's amber reserves. You can find out about this fact and many others in the only museum of amber in Russia. It has been functioning in Kaliningrad since 1979 in the round Dohna Tower built in the 1850s on the Verkneye Lake. The tower was named after the Prussian Field Marshall Dohna who participated in the war against Napoleon.
The Amber Museum occupies three floors. One of them presents amber weighing 4.28 kg. This is the largest amber nugget in Russia. Amber with mosquitoes or spiders frozen in it also impresses. One can also see here the author's works and replicas of parts of the legendary Amber Room - a royal gift from the Prussian Royal House to Peter the Great. During the Second World War the room was plundered, but in 2003 in Tsarskoe Selo a copy of the work of Russian masters was opened. The Amber Museum presents archaeological finds of the II-V centuries. The most ancient amber artifacts date back to the Neolithic Age. The amber creations of European masters of the XVII century are of a great value. This collection was presented to the museum by the Moscow Armory Chamber. More than 200 thousand visitors come to the museum every year.
