Alexander’s Triumphal Arch is one of the symbols of Krasnodar. It appeared in 1888 as an embodiment of the citizens’ joy caused by the visit of Emperor Alexander III to the city. Another name of the Arch is Tsarskie Vorota (Tsar’s Gates). Its construction became possible thanks to the donations of merchants. In 1900, tram-lines appeared under the central span of the Arch.
Alexander’s Triumphal Arch was demolished in autumn of 1928. The townspeople were told that it hindered the normal operation of the tram. However, it was restored many years later, namely in 2008. The construction process was difficult, as there were no diagrams or drawings of the arch left. Architects restored the image of the arch on the basis of photographs and descriptions. Today, the arch catches the eye by the red color of the brick and the abundance of ornaments. Next to it there is a monument to the Holy Great Martyr Catherine, the patroness of the city. Old residents say that if go inside a stylized bell, where there is a sculpture of St. Catherine, you can ask her for intercession. The 8-meters-high sculptural pedestal is embellished with fountains. In the evening, the arch and the monument are illuminated.
