Novosibirsk Akademgorodok was built in 1960 on the initiative of the academician Lavrentyev for the employees of the Siberian Branch of the Academy of Sciences and Novosibirsk State University students. The unique layout plan has preserved the forested areas around, that’s why Akademgorodok is still surrounded by greenery.
There is a paleontological exhibition working in Novosibirsk Akademgorodok. The foyer of one of the entrances of the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography contains unique exhibits, such as a trogonterievy elephant (steppe mammoth) - the ancestor of mammoths and the biggest representative of Proboscideas in history. The skeleton age is estimated at 500-700 thousand years! Nearby, there are also the skeletons of a woolly rhinoceros and buffalo which lived in these parts. In the alleys of Akademgorodok you can find some unexpected art objects: a monument to the laboratory mouse with glasses in front of the Institute of Cytology and Genetics, knitting a DNA double helix, as well as a bench in the form of a crumpled sheet with a crib note at the University building. There is also a club in the territory of Akademgorodok with a funny name “NII KuDA”, which means "Scientific-Research Institute of Culture and Leisure of Akademgorodok".
